WhatsApp Launches Secret Code: Here’s What It Is And How To Use The New Feature

Earlier this year, WhatsApp rolled out the Chat Lock feature that helps users protect their sensitive conversations by locking them in a secure folder within the app. Now, the Meta-owned messaging app is launching Secret Code, an additional security feature to help users protect selected chats from unauthorized access by hiding them behind a different code or password. Here’s everything you need to know about the new WhatsApp passcode.

Secret Lock is an extension of Chat Lock

On November 30, 2023, Mark Zuckerberg announced the Secret Code feature. As an extension of the Chat Lock feature, the passcode allows users to “set a unique password”, different from the one they use to unlock their phone, to give their locked chats “an extra layer of confidentiality”. However, unlike locked chats, chats hidden using a passcode are not visible in the inbox section.

Here’s how to use the passcode feature

According to the official blog, users need to enter the secret code in the search bar at the top of the inbox section to discover hidden chats. If the feature doesn’t meet users’ needs, they can turn it off and have locked chats appear in their inbox. To access the feature on Android phones, users need to open the Locked Chats feature, tap the three-dot menu at the top, select “Lock Chat Settings” and enable “Hide Locked Chats.” Next, users need to enter a password to lock chats.

Secret code soon deployed for everyone

The blog post also mentions that users will not need to open individual chat settings to lock a chat. Instead, they should long-press on a chat and select “Lock Chat.” The feature is currently rolling out to users and should be available to everyone in the coming days.
