Vote now: How often do you use emojis and GIFs in your messages?

Yesterday, while communicating with one of my colleagues, a fairly young new employee, I realized that we were using a completely different set of messaging tools, so to speak. I needed time to decipher the strings of emoticons that, sometimes, were all this coworker sent me.

Now, I’m not a baby boomer (technically, I’m part of the millennial group), but emojis have never been my thing. Back in the days of mIRC, we used all sorts of combinations of symbols to convey more or less the same emotions as modern smiley faces, but somehow it was different.

It took a certain level of commitment and knowledge of this kind of “Morse code” to be able to communicate properly on these mIRC channels back then. Maybe it’s the same with modern emoticons, I don’t know, but when it’s already a very small graphic, and sometimes even animated for you, I found it in poor taste.

This is of course my personal opinion and I don’t judge people who use emoticons in their messages all the time. But it got me thinking: how often do people actually use these little faces to reinforce their communication?
