Man United’s Onana must improve after UCL errors – Fernandes،

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said Andre Onana “must do better” but insisted the goalkeeper was not solely responsible for his side’s collapse at Galatasaray.

Onana awarded free kicks to Hakim Ziyech either side of half-time as the Turkish side earned a 3-3 draw on Wednesday that left United on the brink of elimination from the Champions League.

Asked if, as captain, he needed to speak to Onana, Fernandes replied: “He knows how to handle those moments. He needs to do better on the pitch, like we all do. We should have do more to get a better result. It’s not just because of him that we got this negative result. We all have to take responsibility for what we do, me first and foremost.”

United manager Erik ten Hag supported Onana after the match, saying: “It’s not about individuals… it’s always about the team.”

Fernandes agrees: “We all need to know that we have to improve and there are things to improve. We make a lot of mistakes in the Champions League and it costs us dearly.”

Only Antwerp have scored more goals, 15, in the Champions League than United (14) this season.

“We have conceded a lot of goals so far,” Fernandes said. “We are probably the team that concedes the most goals. We need to control the game better.”

Fernandes was also disappointed that his team did not kill off the match when they had the chance after leading 2-0 and 3-1.

“We need to be more clinical,” he said. “It can’t be that with all the clear chances we had we didn’t take advantage of them and ended up with a negative result. We should have scored more goals.”

Fernandes said he knew his team’s chances of playing in Europe in the new year were slim.

United are bottom of Group A ahead of their final group match, against leaders Bayern Munich on December 12, while third-placed Galatasaray travel to Copenhagen.

There’s not much we can do except win our next match against Bayern Munich and hope for a good result in the next match,” Fernandes said.

“Unfortunately, we depend on others. It could have been different if we had won, but we weren’t good enough to achieve it.”
