Remember Twitter’s audio chat room: Spaces? Well, this is one of the features that Elon Musk decided to keep after renaming the social media platform to X and introducing numerous updates and new features in his attempts to make X an “app for everything”: social media, a bank, a marketplace, and whatever the tech billionaire decides. Now it looks like Spaces is taking a new turn with the introduction of a camera option. An X tip from Aaron revealed some code in the latest X update for iOS, hinting at the imminent arrival of videos in Spaces. The exact release date for this feature remains unclear, but it should be on the horizon.
With the next video update, Spaces is moving from an audio-only approach to video integration, positioning itself closer to the functionality of video conferencing tools like Google Meet or Zoom, where you can host a meeting online with your colleagues, followers or even friends (hopefully we can see them live, but nevertheless, as 2020 has shown, such tools can be useful).
To host a Space, you can launch it by long-pressing the Compose post from your Home timeline and selecting the Spaces icon or choosing the Spaces tab at the bottom. The spaces are public, allowing anyone to participate as a listener.
Up to 13 people, including the host and 2 co-hosts, can speak simultaneously. Scheduling is an option and hosts can invite others to speak or send permission requests. Starting a Space includes enabling mic access, and hosts can share the link via a post so others can join the conversation.
