Google Messages Gets Support For Ultra HDR Images

Google Messages is the company’s communications service that allows users to send and receive messages. However, what makes it attractive is the RCS support. Through Google Messages, users can share images, videos, links, and other media, such as GIFs and stickers, just as they would on a third-party app like WhatsApp or Telegram. And now Google Messages also supports Ultra HDR images.

What are Ultra HDR images and why are they important?

According to a report from TheSpAndroid, Google Messages recently added support for Ultra HDR images in RCS-compatible chats. The feature allows users to send and receive ultra HDR images with higher contrast ratio and brightness. As the name suggests, the format provides a better visual experience and can be viewed by users on both HDR and non-HDR displays.

For those catching up, this new image format is exclusively available on Google’s latest operating system, Android 14. According to the app code, Google added support for Ultra HDR images just before to launch the Pixel 8 series, which happens to be the only smartphone that supports the new aspect ratio.
