Many Android smartphones around the world (China being the exception) come preloaded with Google apps, and one of the mainstays is the Google app. Now there is a buzz that Google is considering some tweaks to improve the search experience on Android smartphones.

According to LeSpAndroid (via Android Authority), the latest update, version 14.48.26.29.arm64, of the Google application presents a notable change: the search bar is moved down, just above the lower navigation tabs. This change applies to both the main search bar and the search bar visible in search results.

Now, this may seem like a small adjustment, but dragging that search bar down is a game-changer. For what? Well, it makes typing easier on any phone, big or small. And let’s be honest, phones have gotten bigger and bigger in recent years.

Take the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, for example, which has a massive 6.8-inch screen. Reach the top of that screen with one hand? Not the easiest. Pulling the search bar down means quick searches with just a thumb, no matter the size or grip of your hand. This modification aims to alleviate pressure on the fingers and ensure a secure grip on the phone.

Oh, and here’s an interesting tidbit: Google Chrome on iOS sticks to a bottom URL bar, while on Android it’s at the top. Although this search bar move is happening in the Google app for now, hopefully it will also make its way to Chrome for Android.

The precise release date of this change is uncertain, pending approval from Google. For now, the feature is open to beta testers, signaling continued testing before a possible wider rollout.
