But Tszyu could be the perfect appetizer in a bumper week for Australian sports stars in Vegas.

According to News Corp.Tszyu’s promoters No Limit are in talks with the NRL for ‘The Soul Taker’ to take on a boxing superstar in February.

This comes after Fox Sports Nick Walshaw revealed that No Limit is targeting Jermell Charlo, Errol Spence or Terence Crawford as Tszyu’s opponent if he gets past Brian Mendoza in his first world title defense.

As well as taking part in what could be one of the biggest weeks in Australian sport, Tszyu is rubbing his hands at the thought of landing his first fight in the ‘mecca of boxing’.

“I’m 100% for this,” Tszyu said News Corp..

“I’m focusing on Mendoza first, then everyone can be excited about what’s on the horizon. There will already be plenty of Australians there to support their teams, so why not? The stars are coming always for big fights and big events, so it makes sense. It’s an all-Australian takeover.

“I feel amazing!” » Mendoza prepared | 03:57

“For me, it’s just the big fights from now on.

“Everyone knows the names I want. That’s why I told my promoters that we had to head to the Mecca of boxing: Las Vegas.

REVEALED: HOW TIM’S RIVAL BEAT HIS FATHER 30 YEARS AGO

Ismael Salas will never forget the night his fighter beat Kostya Tszyu.

Never mind that it was 30 years ago.

Or that since then his life has been filled with 22 world champions.

Think about guys like Felix Savon, Joel Casamayor, Yuri Gamboa, Jorge Linares, Guillermo Rigondeaux, David Haye, Erislandy Lara, and even Australia’s Danny Green.

But the fighter we want to talk about today?

It’s Jesus Sollet.

“Oh, yes,” Salas begins, knowing exactly where our conversation is going.

“Very technical boxer.

“And his fight with Kostya, incredible.

“Very competitive.

“That’s why I’ve known Kostya Tszyu for many years.

“We also met a few times here in Australia when I was working with Danny Green.

“And Tim, he’s now a great fighter like his father.

“Very similar style.

“I want to chase glory!” » The stranger waits | 02:58

“But if we have to fight, we fight.”

Exactly 30 years after Salas orchestrated that victory against a burgeoning, heavy-handed, rat-tailed Russian amateur – a kid who would eventually take over the fight world, winning multiple titles – the famed Cuban trainer now attempts to end his son.

Or more precisely, take Tim Tszyu’s WBO super middleweight title.

With the now Las Vegas-based trainer on the Gold Coast this afternoon, walking to the ring with his latest protégé, American world title contender Brian Mendoza.

Although he entered the Australian Championship headliner after a string of three consecutive knockouts, Mendoza will still open as a betting underdog against Tszyu, the Australian poster boy who is himself undefeated in 23 fights.

A fighter also whose future opponents are mentioned like Jermell Charlo, Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jnr, even Canelo Alvarez.

So how does Salas become the first man in history to beat Kostya and Tim Tszyu?

“Look, it’s sport,” offers the trainer who has also twice cornered fighters who beat global boxing megastar Manny Pacquiao.

“I have so much respect for these guys.

“Same with Pacquaio, who lost to one of my Thai fighters and then to Yordenis Ugas.

“And you always have to have that mentality, where it’s about sportsmanship, it’s about mutual respect.

“For me, it’s the most beautiful thing in sport.”

Of course, winning world titles as an underdog isn’t bad either, right?

“Every fighter has his time,” Salas says simply. “And right now, it’s Brian Mendoza time.”

Even if Mendoza were to go and make boxing history on the Gold Coast this afternoon – and Salas, working in his corner, did the same – don’t bother looking for details on how it all came together. passed the first time with Sollet.

Simply put, you won’t find it.

Boxrec showing only 49 of Kostya Tszyu’s 270 amateur fights, of which he lost only 11.

Coincidentally, you can find four of them on the said website – Vernon Forrest, Juan Hernandez Sierra and Andreas Zuelow, twice.

But for the rest ?

We must rely on the memory of men like Salas.

Asked about the details of the night his man knocked Tszyu down, he replied: “It was in 1983, at the National Youth Championships in Cuba.

“Jesus Sollet was one of the great Cuban fighters at Guantanamo, where I am from.

“Same thing with Brian Mendoza’s father.

“Brian was born in the United States but his dad is from my same hometown.

“So while they were living in New Mexico, he called me, asked if I might be interested in training his son, and we started there.

“Even though Brian has Cuban blood, his fights are more Mexican style, if you know what I mean.

“It’s time to go swimming” Tszyu chokes | 02:51

“And now, for more than five years, we have taken him with us.

“Initially he was fighting at 147, struggling to make weight

“So we got to the super welterweight ranks and now everyone can see him, winning his last three by knockout.”

So, face the Tszyu family again?

“Kostya Tszyu, such a great fighter,” Salas says.

“And he has so much respect in Cuba.

“I’ve done so many great things.

“I know Tim still has to prove his father’s legacy.

“And I know he’s under pressure to carry on his father’s name.

“But I really like his style.

“It will be a great fight.”
