Wrexham secured a 6-0 victory over Morecambe thanks to a Paul Mullin hat-trick and climbed to second place in the League Two table.

The team owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who came into the match eager to bounce back from their loss to Accrington Stanley which ended their 11-match unbeaten streak, started superbly and led 2-0 in seven minutes.

Morecambe defender Joel Senior put himself in his own net in the 5th minute before Mullin doubled their lead two minutes later with a neat finish from 10 yards.

Jacob Mendy, who replaced the injured Anthony Forde, tore through the visitors’ defense and unleashed a powerful shot which flew into the net and put Wrexham 3-0 up at the break.

Morecambe, who are reeling from the sudden departure of manager Derek Adams for Ross County last week, suffered further misery in the second half, when Mullin’s deflected strike went past goalkeeper Adam Smith in the 67th minute .

Mullin completed his first hat-trick of the season 10 minutes later with a left-footed strike from outside the box before James Jones’ injury-time goal capped off a fine afternoon for the team by Phil Parkinson.

League leaders Stockport County’s defeat against Newport County means Wrexham are now just five points behind them.
