HyperX Cloud III Review – GameRevolution

THE HyperX Cloud III is highly anticipated among gamers, as a sequel to arguably the most revered gaming headset released in the last decade. The new version aims to strike a balance between quality and affordability, targeting gamers who value comfort, sound quality and durability. Here’s how it performed after two weeks of dedicated testing, both at work (listening to music and watching Netflix) and at play.

The return of the cloud

The Cloud III inherits its predecessor’s emphasis on comfort, with HyperX memory foam in the headband and ear cushions. Wrapped in premium soft faux leather, these components ensure a plush and comfortable fit, which is an important factor for gamers involved in long gaming sessions. The lightweight nature of the headset also contributes to its comfort, making it easy to wear for long periods without fatigue.

Improvements under the hood

HyperX has apparently retuned the Cloud III’s 53mm drivers to deliver an “optimal listening experience” that “accentuates dynamic in-game sounds.” However, I found the bass a bit lacking. Additionally, the headset’s closed design doesn’t create a very wide or natural passive soundstage, which could be a drawback for users looking for a more immersive audio experience. However, this is a common limitation of closed form, which naturally keeps the audio enclosed.

The improved microphone is a standout feature of the Cloud III. It captures high-quality audio, ensuring clear conversations and voice calls. The noise cancellation function and built-in mesh filter effectively reduce disturbing sounds. Additionally, the LED mic mute indicator is a handy addition, providing visual feedback on the status of the mic. Users report that the microphone’s performance is surprisingly crisp and better than many more expensive competitors.

Long-lasting durability

Durability is another strong point of the Cloud III. Its flexible design and all-metal frame provide resistance to the usual wear and tear associated with regular use and travel. The headset’s sleek, premium design also adds to its appeal, giving it a look and feel that suggests a higher price tag. There are no obvious issues that I think will fail over the next few years of use.

One for all

The headset’s compatibility is extensive, supporting various platforms such as PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac, and mobile devices. The inclusion of 3.5mm, USB-A and USB-C connectors ensures maximum compatibility. However, the headset lacks wireless and noise-cancelling features, which are increasingly common in this price range. Although there is a wireless version, it is expensive.

Difficult sale

At its $99.99 price point, the Cloud III faces stiff competition from the HyperX line and other brands. Models like the HyperX Cloud Alpha offer better bass response at a similar price, while options like the Razer BlackShark V2 offer a more immersive sound experience. The Cloud III is a modest upgrade over its predecessor, but it’s in a difficult position, competing with other headsets that offer more features or better audio performance for a similar cost.
